Swan Lake - backstage
Once again, I was privileged to be allowed backstage during a dress rehearsal for the Oregon Ballet Theatre. This is the 3rd performance I have been in the wings for. It's moments like this that make me happy I'm there. The shots from the front of the house are intoxicating - it's hard not to get a good shot, but in the end they are a document of the performance. Shooting from backstage lets me combine that documentation with some artistic interpretation, and find these moments.

Cheers

Thanks Everyone!
I am still #1 in my category at the PDN Photo Annual Online. Last time I checked I had 203 votes. I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to vote. I'm not sure if I win a fabulous new car or anything, but it's cool to be in the top 5 of the popular vote. Check it out.

Refining in Colorado

A refinery shot from the highway, on the way to the airport. Photographers (myself included) seem attracted to intricate industrial structures. Here's a quote from Joel Meyerowitz [from his Phaidon 55 book] that seems appropriate:
New York City, 1976. During this period, I was trying to make photographs about the 'all of it'; pictures without a central subject. I wanted all the information, near and far, to hold out interest equally, and I wanted colour to be an intricate part of the content. I was trying to unlock photography from the aesthetic of the decisive mnoment - a difficult thing to give up.

and another:
Sometimes we see things from a car window that, were we to stop and go back to photograph them, would no longer be there. The world that rolls by, framed by the car window, is like a film strip, and the wonder of phtoography is that one can isolate the 60-miles-per-hour revelations it contains.
